Veg Patch & Orchard:
One of the first things we
did when we moved to Devon was to start our orchard. We knew it would
take years before we were rewarded for our efforts so it was imperative that
we got started as soon as possible. We have had good crops of plums
and cherries but this year was the first for us to get a decent crop of
apples. The orchard also serves another purpose and is used as home
for the chickens and geese which we raise for meat.
| The vegetable patch is doing well. This
year we are growing an abundance of different vegetables including
corgettes, butternut squash, vegetable spagetti, Jack O'lantern
pumpkins, carrots, sweetcorn, sugar snap peas, mangetout, broad beans,
runner beans, beetroot, radishes, salad stuff and so much more. We have
been a bit more adventurous with some things (like the squashes -
although I will still need to get Julian to eat them!) and other things
we have found what works for us and just stuck to that (like our
favourite spuds).
I have created a new vegetable garden in the field
next to the house. Last year the cows went on the
rampage through my old veg patch and it was the final straw. I
thought that it was bad enough having to contend with the squirrels,
badgers and bunnies but cows on your calabrese is no good! There
are now seven beds which are bursting with produce an and no
animals are allowed near it let alone in it! I have
also put in a second hand greenhouse which has been great and intend to
move the polytunnel too so that all the veg is together in one place.

The
polytunnel has been wonderful and definitely one of
my best purchases. I have used it extensively to germinate and
bring on young plants. We are growing tomatoes, peppers,
melons and cucumbers mainly. I decided to try a range of
tomatoes including Tigerella, San Marzano, Britains Breakfast, Golden
Sunrise, Yellow Brandywine, Pink Brandywine, Gardener's delight and a
few others. I also managed to sell my excess plants at work and
make a few pennies to pay for all the expansion work I have planned.

We have also used the
polytunnel to grow veg over the winter and spuds do really well in there
as well as peas. |
