Blackdown Hills:

We have made our home in the Blackdown Hills, which is listed as an Area of Outstanding National Beauty.  I think that we would both agree with that description.

When we were looking for houses we didn't even realise the Blackdowns existed and now we can't think of anywhere better to be.  It is a very beautiful part of the world and mostly undiscovered. We are directly on the Devon Somerset Border and have easy access to all amenities despite the feeling that you are in the middle of nowhere. From our fields we can see the Wellington Monument and from the Wellington Monument there are views of the Quantocks and Exmoor, not to mention Taunton Vale. So if we ever get tired of our own hills we can always admire someone else's.

One of the reasons for selecting the Blackdowns was their proximity to the coast. Julian is a keen surfer and whenever he has a spare moment he is in North Devon surfing, which is only about 50 minutes drive.  The South Devon coast and places like Beer are about the same distance so we get the best of both.

There is a real community spirit here and we have been very lucky that when we have needed help, whether it is problems lambing or being towed out when the tractor is stuck there has always been someone there to assist.  It is amazing what can be achieved with collaborative working and our village is certainly a prime example of this.
