Smallholders Taster Days
Visit our small mixed livestock farm on the beautiful Blackdown Hills in somerset and dip your toes in the water to gain some insight into the joys and perils of keeping livestock. We started our first smallholding with a cottage and 2 acres of land in 1988, so we know what it is like to start from scratch. We now farm beef cattle, sheep, pigs, hens, ducks, geese, table chickens and christmas turkeys, selling everything we produce direct. Come and join us to learn some basic facts about keeping livestock – what species might suit you best, basic dos and don’ts, simple animal husbandry and fencing options and a little bit about the paperwork. Slaughtering and butchering options will also be covered together with pointers to useful sources of advice and information. This course is aimed at novice or wannabe smallholders to enable you to make informed decisions about keeping livestock on your land. The course will run for one day from 10am to 4pm. Lunch and refreshments are provided. Dates are either Saturday 5th or Sunday 6th March 2011. Numbers are strictly limited so please book early. Your hosts and tutors are Nick & Ruth Strange, from Beech Hayes Farm. Between them they have over half a century (blimey!) of practical and theoretical experience – come along and pick their brains! For more information or to book please email beechhayes@aol.com Current Dates: 5th or 6th March 2011
